The Perfect Beach Waves

My first beauty post and I’m so excited to share my mini hair tutorial with you guys. Hope you guys enjoy it.

I have received so many questions about my hair and the items I use so I am going to jump right in regarding some products. I really try to strain away from harsh chemicals, too many hair sprays, hair gels all that stuff. It just leaves my hair dry and damaged, hard to work with. I love me a great shampoo and conditioner, when I am not using a conditioner in the shower then I love a great leave in conditioner. There are a few brands I love Matrix Biolage, AG and Nexxus.  I love AG Thikk Volume shampoo and the AG Fast Food leave in conditioner. Most recently I have been using using NEXXUS Caviar Complex shampoo and conditioner and I absolutely love it, it smells great and makes your hair feel smooth and luxurious. Always remember to alternate your shampoos, don’t use the same one for long periods. Now the haircut part, I always get my hair layered, it’s great if you want volume and layers frame your face just right. Since moving to Atlanta I see IRENE at BESPOKE SALON in Sandy Springs. She is absolutely amazing, I love her and her technique, if you are in the area you should book an appointment with her, you won’t regret it.

The Curling Iron I use is called Hot Tools in the measurements 1 1/4th inch. It’s actually on sale right now at ULTA. I want to note that I don’t use it as a regular curling iron, I use it as a wand and you will see what I mean below. 🙂

I washed my hair the night before using NEXXUS caviar complex shampoo and conditioner. I use a regular comb and then blow dry my hair using The Hot Tools Blow Dryer with attachment.  I use a big barrel brush while blow drying, otherwise mine will look like a lion’s mane and Im not even kidding about that! My hair dresser always advised me to use the higher heat setting while drying your hair, the medium heat actually causes more damage and more frizz (good thing to remember)  this is what my hair looks like in the morning after I have blow dried it and slept in it.

I put my hair in a half up half down ponytail and wrap it in a bun using a clip, to keep it out of the way, as pictured above, I do this so I can start in sections, I have a ton of hair, I mean a ton of hair and doing it in sections helps keep things manageable and tangle free.

1. Now that you have put your hair in a half down half up style, I separate my hair; some on the left and some on the right. I always work from the back to the front, makes it easier that way, at least for me. The setting on my curling iron is between 400 and 430 Fahrenheit which is on the higher end. I take a section, and run my curling iron through it, just subtly, not so harsh like you would with a straightener.

2. The MOST IMPORTANT PART, CURL AWAY FROM YOUR FACE. I start from the top and spiral it around and down the curling iron. PLEASE REMEMBER I do not use the clamp while actually curling my hair. Hold it for ONLY 5 to 10 seconds at the most depending on the thickness of your hair.

3. TAA DAA!!!! you have done your first piece, now just leave it in the back so it doesn’t get mixed in with your unfinished pieces! 🙂

4. Now that you have done your two bottom halves, its time to do your top half.

5. You will take your top and separate it into two parts, depending on how you part your hair. I part mine in the middle so you see the “Miley Cyrus” top bun look!

6. As you see I have separated the sections AGAIN. Since they were in a bun while I was doing my hair, I brush it out just using a regular brush to keep everything smooth. I do this because I have a ton of hair and like to keep everything nice and neat. I start and do the back section first and leave those completed pieces in the back.

7. This is how it gets wrapped around the curling iron, I always start from the top, that is what gets you the beach wave look and remember away from the face!

8. Wrap the piece nicely around the barrel and do not use the clamp.

9. Hold it for only 5 to 10 seconds and gently unwrap it from the curling iron.

10. You are almost there, you have completed one side already!!! Yay!!

11. Now the other side, as you see, I subtly run my curling iron through the piece of hair I selected, which is what makes my curls so smooth!

12. This is the completed back view!

Now just gently run your fingers, (NOT with a brush or comb) through your hair to blend all your pieces together and give it some volume!!

I love your hair! 🙂 Is there a reason you don’t just use a wand to curl?

      Hi Lauren,

Quite honestly, a few years ago, I tried a few wands and just never liked them, then I purchased the Hot Tools curling iron and loved how my curls look and at times I use it as a wand and other days if Im in a rush i’ll use it as an actual curling iron, so it reduces the amount of tools I need in my bathroom. 🙂
